Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs will host the "The Future of the Social Welfare State: The U.S. and Europe" conference on Dec. 9 from 12:30-5:45 p.m. at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. The event is free and open to the public.

Organized by Jerry Legge, the associate dean of SPIA, the conference will bring together some of the nation's top scholars to discuss the financial crisis in the public sector in the U.S. and Europe. The schedule of events includes three afternoon panel discussions.

"With the current financial crisis in the Eurozone and the inability of the president and Congress to agree on public spending in the U.S., there is no topic more timely and crucial to Western democracies than the future of the social welfare state," Legge said.

"We expect all of the panel discussions to be lively and informative, and we hope that anyone interested in the current financial crisis will take advantage of the opportunity to participate in all or part of this important forum."

Among the featured speakers at the conference is B. Guy Peters of the University of Pittsburgh, co-author of Can Government Go Bankrupt?; D. Roderick Kiewiet of the California Institute of Technology, an expert on the California fiscal crisis; and Gary Freeman of the University of Texas at Austin, an expert on immigration in Western democracies.

The event is made possible by the UGA Office of the Provost through funding for State of the Art Conferences.
