Athens, Ga. - The class of 2016 at the University of Georgia will include nine students who have been awarded the Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship, one of the university's premier academic awards.

UGA Foundation trustees created the scholarship in 2000 to recognize the university's most generous individual benefactor, Bernard Ramsey, a 1937 graduate of UGA's Terry College of Business. He served as chairman of the board for Merrill Lynch for a number of years.

The Ramsey Honors Scholars will enroll in UGA's academically rigorous Honors Program. The students can participate in a variety of academic enrichment opportunities, including study abroad and undergraduate research. Senior faculty and current Ramsey Scholars serve as mentors for the new group.

"It is indeed a pleasure to welcome the new Ramsey Scholars," said David S. Williams, associate provost and director of UGA's Honors Program. "They are talented, they have impressive academic credentials, and they display a commitment to service. We look forward to working with them."

In-state students receive an annual stipend of $5,050 and the HOPE Scholarship. Out-of-state students receive an annual stipend of $8,250 and out-of-state tuition waivers. Ramsey Scholars also receive $3,000 travel-study grants for additional academic opportunities.

The incoming class average SAT score is 1543 (math and verbal only) and the average ACT score is 35. The high school grade point average is 4.15 on a 4.0 scale, which indicates extra points for Advanced Placement courses. The Ramsey Scholars also have impressive high school academic and extracurricular credentials.

The Ramsey Scholars may renew the scholarship for an additional three years of academic study as long as they maintain a cumulative 3.5 grade point average and are in good standing with the Honors Program. The new group will bring the current number of Ramsey Scholars to 26.
