Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will host John Nolan and Trinita Kennedy as they address different aspects of the current exhibit “A Divine Light: Northern Renaissance Paintings from the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery” on April 12 at 5:30 p.m.
Kennedy, who is the associate curator at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, Tenn., which co-organized the exhibition with the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery, will present “Gather Around the Fire: Taking a Closer Look at the Madonna of the Fireplace,” focusing specifically on one painting in the exhibition.
She will discuss the painting’s possible origins, its position within the Northern Renaissance tradition and the symbolic meaning of many of the objects it depicts.
Nolan, who is the curator at the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery, will present “A Short History of Collecting Northern Renaissance Paintings at American Universities: Context for the Formation of the BJU Art Collection.” His talk will examine the history of university museums collecting Northern Renaissance paintings, including the pioneering efforts of BJU in the mid-20th century.
“A Divine Light” will be at the museum through July 29. It present 28 works of art from one of the finest collections of old master paintings in the Southeast, and it investigates the ways in which Northern Renaissance artists expressed the central mysteries of the Christian faith through setting, pose, gesture and the objects of everyday life.
