Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources will host over 250 scouts from three states for the spring 2007 Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Cherokee District Advance-A-Rama on Saturday, March 3. Scouts will participate in nineteen different merit badge classes taught by several different UGA departments including three classes (environmental science, fish and wildlife management and orienteering) taught by Warnell School students.
“The Cherokee District Advance-A-Rama is a tremendous event and opportunity for individual scouts to earn highly regarded merit badges, increase their personal growth and development, and enjoy the fellowship of hundreds of fellow Boy Scouts from the surrounding regions,” explained Dale Greene, coordinator of the Advanc-A-Rama for the Warnell School. “The Warnell School is very pleased to offer its facilities and services to the Cherokee District of the BSA, as are all UGA faculty and students who have agreed to provide merit badge classes to these Boy Scouts.”
In addition to the three classes taught by Warnell School students, scouts also can earn merit badges in art (Franklin College of Arts and Sciences), aviation (UGA Air Force ROTC), citizenship in the community and the nation (UGA Public Affairs), journalism (Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and Athens Banner-Herald), veterinary medicine (UGA College of Veterinary Medicine), and weather (UGA Dept. of Biological and Agricultural Engineering), among others.
This will be the second BSA Cherokee District Advance-A-Rama hosted by the Warnell School. This event previously was sponsored by the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School until that facility was placed on the base closure list by the Department of Defense in 2005. At that time, the Warnell School offered its facilities and services to enable this event to continue providing large numbers of merit badge classes to the Boy Scouts of the local region.
