Athens, Ga. - More than 150 students from Griffin-Spalding County School District elementary schools are expected to compete in the fourth annual Math Milieu competition on May 3 at the Student Learning Center on the University of Georgia Griffin campus.
Participating schools may bring up to five students per each grade-first through fifth-to compete in the contest involving mathematical problems. Medals will be awarded for the top three places in each grade. The cost for each school team is $150. The deadline for school registration is April 4.
The competition will begin at 8 a.m. for first-grade students. During the grade-level competition, each student will receive five tickets. The question will be read to students in grades 1-2. Students in grades 3-5 will read their question independently. Students will write their responses on a dry erase board. Once time is called, the students will put their pens down and show their answers. The monitors will check answers and remove one ticket for incorrect answers. Students will continue to play as long as they have a ticket. The top three students will be recognized for each grade level.
The event is being hosted by the College of Education's graduate program in mathematics and science education at UGA-Griffin.
