Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia's National Student Exchange program is accepting applications for students to participate during the 2013-2014 academic year. A domestic parallel to study abroad programs, the exchange allows students to earn credit at other participating institutions nationwide while paying UGA tuition and fees. The application deadline is Feb. 28.
Students can choose from nearly 200 member colleges and universities in 48 states, three U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. The campuses range in size from some of the largest research universities to smaller liberal arts colleges.
"Many of our returning students describe NSE as a life-changing experience that has made them more independent, self-confident and resourceful," said Joshua Podvin, senior coordinator of the center for student organizations and UGA coordinator of the exchange.
"The program has expanded their risk-taking capabilities and helped them better define their academic and career goals," he said.
Students can participate in the exchange for a single semester or up to one academic year. Benefits of the program include expansion of personal and academic experience, access to courses and professors with different perspectives and exploration of new cultures and communities.
Among the participating institutions are those serving primarily Hispanic populations, historically black colleges and universities and a number of ethnically diverse campuses.
Eligibility information, brochures and application forms are available in the exchange office, located in room 102U of the Tate Student Center.
Students can visit the exchange office to speak with program coordinators anytime. Dedicated office hours are 9-10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays through Feb. 26 or 10 a.m.-noon on Fridays through Feb. 22. No appointments are necessary.
Since its founding in 1968, the program has placed more than 100,000 students in exchange.
The UGA office of the National Student Exchange is a program within UGA's Division of Student Affairs.
