34 students to enter UGA with major scholarship awards

ATHENS, Ga. – Thirty-four academically outstanding students will enter the University of Georgia this fall as the recipients of major scholarships awarded by the institution. The students were selected from a record number of applicants for these highly competitive awards.

Nineteen students were awarded Foundation Fellowships, which provide an annual stipend of $8,300 for in-state students (all of whom qualify for the HOPE Scholarship), and $12,500 for out-of-state students, along with a tuition waiver. Foundation Fellows also receive travel-study and academic conference/research grants, and a variety of other academic enrichment opportunities. The Foundation Fellows program was established in 1972 by the trustees of the University of Georgia Foundation to create an enhanced educational experience for undergraduate students with stellar academic credentials.

Another 15 students were awarded Ramsey Honors Scholarships, which include a $4,000 stipend for in-state students (plus the HOPE Scholarship) and a $6,700 stipend for out-of-state students, along with a tuition waiver. Ramsey Scholars also receive a $2,500 travel-study grant. The awards, established in 2000, are named for UGA’s most generous individual benefactor, the late Bernard Ramsey.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions helped identify qualified students and then reviewed almost 900 applications. The new Foundation Fellows have an average SAT of 1532 and average GPA of 4.11 on a 4.0 scale, having earned extra credit for advanced courses. Eleven students scored a perfect 800 on either the verbal or the math portion of the SAT and three had perfect scores of 1600. The Ramsey Honors Scholars have an average SAT of 1487 and average GPA of 4.11.

The scholarship recipients are enrolled in UGA’s Honors Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country. Overall, the entering Honors class of 450 students will be the most highly qualified in UGA’s history, with an average SAT of 1438 and average weighted GPA of 4.05.

“We are delighted with this year’s incoming Foundation Fellows and Ramsey Honors Scholars,” says Jere Morehead, associate provost and director of the Honors and Foundation Fellows Program. “They are coming to UGA with a wealth of academic and other talents, and will undoubtedly contribute to campus in many ways. It is clear that we have one of the best scholarship programs in the country when we attract students of this caliber.”

This year’s scholarship recipients hail from Georgia and a dozen other states. One Foundation Fellow, Shion Guha, is from Calcutta, India. The other new Foundation Fellows are:
