The Office of Service-Learning will hold a lunch-and-learn program from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 2 in the conference room at Instructional Plaza North. The program will feature the presentation, “Testing the Waters: Community-Based Research to Reduce the Risks of Contaminated Seafood in Glynn County” by Lisa Liguori, a public service faculty member in Marine Extension.
Liguori’s current research encompasses fisheries anthropology, toxicology, ecology, and environmental and social justice.
The presentation describes a study in which students and commercial crabbers worked with UGA extension agents to test local blue crabs for PCBs and mercury. Through service-learning, high school students are learning how to reduce risks for their families and helping to spread the word with innovative outreach tools.
