Athletic Association recognized for its work during NCAA gymnastics championship

The gymnastics team wasn’t the only winner following the NCAA Championship at Stegeman Coliseum in April.

SportsTravel Magazine recognized the UGA Athletic Association for its overall work in hosting the three-day championship April 24-26. SportsTravel gave UGA the award for the best collegiate multi-sport or multi-discipline event.

“This is certainly a team award,” said Carla Williams, senior associate athletic director and administrator for gymnastics. “There are so many people involved in putting on an event like this, and most of these folks work behind the scenes. It takes a great deal of planning, hard work and dedication on their part, but it’s worth it when the student-athletes, coaches and fans have a positive experience. It’s both exciting and flattering to receive this award.”

Criteria for nomination and voting included organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and spectators and how the venue served to enhance the event.

The Gym Dogs won the program’s ninth overall and fourth straight national championship.

The award was announced recently at the TEAMS (Travel, Events And Management in Sports) 2008 Conference and Expo.
