Writing contest
In conjunction with its upcoming show, The Pillowman, University Theatre is holding a writing contest for dark fairy tales between 500 and 750 words in the spirit of the Brothers Grimm, Neil Gaiman and Stephen King. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 7.

The Pillowman centers around a writer police have taken into custody to interrogate about a series of child murders that bear an unsettling similarity to the gruesome contents of his short stories. The show runs Oct. 14-17 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 2:30 p.m. in the Cellar Theatre. The winner of the writing contest will be announced and the story will be read aloud opening night.

Stephen Corey, editor of The Georgia Review, will judge the entries. Stories may be e-mailed to Dina Canup at dinac@uga.edu or dropped off in the front office of the Fine Arts Building on the corner of Baldwin and Lumpkin streets.

Adult swimming lessons
The Adult Learn to Swim program will offer lessons at the pool in the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities. Lessons take place on Mondays and Wednesday from 6-
6:45 p.m. beginning on Oct. 13 and ending on Nov. 12. The lessons cost $40 for faculty and staff, $30 for student and $50 for alumni.

Part of the American Red Cross swimming lessons program, the program offers group lessons with certified instructors in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
