Dooley noted

In The New York Times blog “City Room,” UGA English professor John W. Lowe was quoted in a story about the fictional satirist Mr. Dooley. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, humorist Finley Peter Dunne wrote satirical columns about New York and national politics in the voice of Mr. Dooley.

Lowe told the Times, “He set the model for an ethnic spokesman who could be entertaining and informative at the same time using humor to mask a subversive form of humor and get a message across.”
