The occasion marks the end of a unique academic experience for the Class of 2020

Graduates and their families, friends and Bulldogs worldwide are invited to gather online to welcome the University of Georgia’s newest alumni on Dec. 18 as 1,874 undergraduates and 2,526 graduate students—a total of 4,400—have met requirements to graduate.

The undergraduate Commencement ceremony is scheduled to premiere at 9:30 a.m. on commencement.uga.edu. The graduate ceremony will premiere at 2:00 p.m.

“We are so proud of the members of the Class of 2020, who have remained steadfast during this time of uncertainty, representing the best of UGA,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead. “While the format for this year’s Commencement is different, our enthusiasm for celebrating our students remains the same.”

This virtual ceremony brought on by the novel coronavirus will integrate traditional ceremonial components, such as the singing of the national anthem, formal remarks by President Morehead and the official conferring of degrees, with new components like special photo and video memories from the past four years.

Sixteen students will be recognized as First Honor Graduates during the undergraduate ceremony for maintaining a 4.0 cumulative GPA in all work completed at UGA as well as all college-level transfer work prior to or following enrollment at the university.

Of the 2,526 spring, summer and fall graduate students eligible to graduate at the 2:00 p.m. ceremony, 519 are doctoral candidates and 2,007 are receiving their master’s or specialist degrees.

A unique, celebratory gift will be mailed to every graduate eligible to participate in one of these two ceremonies. Graduates should update their addresses to receive their gifts at commencement.uga.edu by Jan. 3, 2021.

To help celebrate this special moment, the university has provided digital downloads for graduates and families to use, print and share. Alumni, family and friends are invited to join in the celebration by sharing a photo or short video with encouraging words and congratulations using #UGAgrad on social media.
