From the bat cave

Scientific Computing quoted Daniel Streicker, a UGA researcher, and Sonia Altizer, an assistant professor of ecology at UGA, in an article documenting their research into the secrets of rabies transmission in bats.

“What’s really important is that molecular sequence data, an increasingly cheap and available resource, can be used to quantify CST (cross species transmission),” said Streicker.

“This is a breakthrough,” Altizer added. “The team defined, for the first time, a framework for quantifying the rates of CST across a network of host species that could be applied to other wildlife pathogens, and they developed novel methods to do it.”
