Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will be take part in the annual Slow Art Day on April 12. This day is celebrated worldwide and encourages visitors to museums to take their time to enjoy works of art. UGA’s slow art-themed event, Family Day, is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a slowed-down gallery games tour and an activity in the Michael and Mary Erlanger Studio Classroom.
Callan Steinmann, associate curator of education for the museum, will lead the tour. “During this Family Day, we are really encouraging people to spend more time with works of art in the collections,” she said.
The goal of tour is to lengthen the time that people look at the art while making it fun and collaborative. “The average time that people spend on an art piece is 6 seconds or less. We want people to appreciate art more with this interactive tour aimed at children and families,” Steinmann continued.
This event is free and open to the public.
April 12 is also the spring football scrimmage for the University of Georgia. The G-Day scrimmage will be held in Sanford Stadium, with kick-off at 2 p.m. Families can participate in the art tour and then attend the scrimmage game. Free parking, with access to both the museum and the stadium, is available in the surface lots surrounding the museum.
