Go Mobile or Go Home!

Imagine taking The Bus through town. On the way to school you can sit back and watch videos, music and news much the same way you do on an airplane. Or imagine walking through downtown Athens. As you pass the double-barreled cannon in front of city hall, information flashes on your PDA telling you some of the history behind this artifact.

“We know wireless technology is good. Now is the time to find out what it is good for,” said UGA’s New Media Institute Director Scott Shamp. “Go Mobile or Go Home! is an opportunity to explore what mobile media technology can-and should-do.”

The mini-conference will feature more than 11 different mobile media prototypes developed by students including Athens MORE, a wireless information delivery system designed for use on public transportation, and Visitour Athens, the first outdoor implementation of location-based technology. This project provides PDA users with a self-guided walking tour of downtown Athens.

Go Mobile or Go Home! is a free, daylong event designed to explore the power and potential of mobile media and wireless technology. The event featured a keynote address by Jaclyn Easton, business technology futurist and author of Going Wireless, as well as panel discussions on the state of wireless, mobile media content and what’s next in wireless innovation. The day concluded as NMI students show off this semester’s mobile media projects just in time for the start of the Twilight Criterium.
