Heat wave

A Los Angeles Times article about increasing temperatures leading to high school football injuries and deaths quoted Andrew Grundstein, associate professor of geography in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.

“The temperature around sunrise is the warmest it has ever been. All 33 deaths we saw [in my study] occurred during higher extreme risk,” he said. “High humidity levels can make conditions very oppressive and very stressful. I think that explains a lot of the deaths we’re seeing.”
