Honors Week at UGA set for April 15-19

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia will celebrate outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni at several events during Honors Week, April 15-19.

“The members of the university community who will be recognized during Honors Week study and work in a variety of fields but share a dedication to academic excellence that is a defining characteristic of the University of Georgia,” said Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Jere Morehead.

The following Honors Week events are by invitation only unless otherwise noted. Classes will remain in session with no cancellations for Honors Day.

Public Service and Outreach Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon
April 15, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m., UGA Hotel and Conference Center. Open to the public, but registration is required at http://t.uga.edu/cz.
Chris Cummiskey, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, will deliver a keynote address on higher education’s role in economic development.

Faculty Recognition Banquet
April 15, 5:45 p.m., UGA Hotel and Conference Center Magnolia Ballroom
Sponsored by the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, the event will recognize the winners of this year’s awards for teaching excellence, including the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorships and the Richard B. Russell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, as well as faculty and staff who will be acknowledged as outstanding advisers and mentors.

Terry College of Business Honors Day Ceremony
April 17, 9 a.m., Chapel
Graduate and undergraduate recipients of named scholarships and departmental awards will be honored, as well as inductees to Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society

Presidential Honors Day Luncheon
April 17, noon, Tate Student Center Grand Hall
The event will honor recipients of national and international scholarships; first honor graduates; the Student Government Association president, vice president and treasurer; and outstanding students in their final year of study from each of the colleges and schools.

Honors Program Graduation Banquet
April 17, 6:30-9 p.m., Classic Center
The event will recognize Honors Program students who have graduated in the summer or fall of 2012 as well as the graduating class of May 2013. The Lothar Tresp and Hatten Howard Outstanding Professor Awards as well as the Jere W. Morehead Award to an exceptional friend of the Honors Program will be presented.

English Department Honors Day
April 18, 4 p.m., Park Hall Room 265
Graduate and undergraduate recipients of named scholarships and departmental awards will be honored, as well as faculty award recipients.

UGA Research Foundation 34th Annual Research Awards Banquet
April 18, 5:30 p.m., UGA Hotel and Conference Center Mahler Auditorium
The event will recognize winners of Creative Research Awards and Medals, the Inventor’s Award, the Georgia BioBusiness Academic Entrepreneur of the Year Award as well as Distinguished Research Professors and postdoctoral and graduate student award recipients.

UGA Alumni Awards Luncheon
April 19, noon, Tate Student Center Grand Hall. Open to the public, but registration is required at http://www.alumni.uga.edu/.
Gordhan L. Patel will receive the Faculty Service Award, and the Honorable Norman S. Fletcher and John W. “Jack” Rooker will each receive the Alumni Merit Award.
