University Housing and Hunker Down with Housing welcome incoming students

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Department of Housing, along with volunteers from its Hunker Down with Housing program, will welcome new and returning students to Athens beginning Aug.7 for Greek rush and recruitment and Aug. 8 for regular housing check-in.

Hunker Down With Housing was initiated in 1998 and is designed to streamline the move in process for students and their families. Approximately 275 UGA student, faculty and staff volunteers will be located across campus to greet an estimated 7,000 new and returning students and parents, provide directions to area parking lots, direct traffic and generally serve as a resource for residents and their families.

To ensure a safe and efficient move-in for students returning to campus, University Housing is working with UGA Parking Services, UGA Police and other campus departments-as well as the Athens-Clarke County government-to assure that the initial days of move-in operate smoothly.

On-street parking will not be available on Finley Street (from Baxter Street to Cloverhurst Avenue) and Church Street (from Baxter Street to Talmadge Drive) from Aug. 6 at 8 a.m. through Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. NOTE: The Tate Student Center parking deck and lot will be used as a staging area for Brumby residents. Vehicles not affiliated with residential move-in for Brumby Hall that are parked in the Tate Center deck and lot will not be allowed to enter or exit Aug. 7 from 6 a.m.-1 p.m.

On Aug. 7 and Aug. 8, traffic is expected to be extremely heavy on Baxter, Lumpkin, Finley, Hull and Church Streets. Members of the Athens community are advised to avoid these areas and be aware that traffic in the university community will be congested throughout the weekend.
