UGA Presents will host internationally acclaimed conductor and early music pioneer Jordi Savall with his renowned ensembles Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hodgson Concert Hall.
The performance, titled “Songs, Battles, and Dances from the Old and the New Worlds 1100-1780,” is a sweeping musical journey spanning seven centuries and exploring the intersections of European, African and American musical traditions. Through a program that blends sacred works, traditional songs and instrumental pieces, the concert traces how music has served as a vehicle for faith, resistance and cultural exchange across continents and generations.
With more than 50 years as a performer, conductor and scholar, Savall has been instrumental in rediscovering and revitalizing historical repertoire. His discography and honors underscore his lasting impact on the field of early music. Savall, widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the revival of early music, brings together musicians from around the world to illuminate the connections between the Medieval and Baroque eras and the diverse musical cultures of the Americas.
The program is organized around three central themes — song, battle and dance — highlighting the role of music in spiritual expression, historical conflict and communal celebration. Audiences will hear repertoire ranging from medieval troubadour songs and Renaissance polyphony to African diaspora spirituals, Sephardic music and traditional works from colonial Latin America.
Guest artists from Canada, Guadeloupe and Mexico join the ensembles, contributing vocal, instrumental and dance traditions that reflect the global scope of the program. The concert concludes with selections from the Trujillo Codex (ca. 1780), a rare collection of music from colonial Peru that captures the blending of European, Indigenous and African influences in the New World.
Audience members can enjoy a free pre-performance talk by Theresa Chafin in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 p.m.
