Spurred by the construction of a new wing and the renovation of its existing building, the Georgia Museum of Art will embark on a two-year series of off-site events and exhibitions entitled “GMOA on the Move” with a 2 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony on March 3 followed by a kickoff party from 7-9 p.m. at the museum, located at 90 Carlton St. Open to the public, the festivities will include food, drink and music.
“GMOA on the Move” includes “The Art of,” events sponsored by the Young at Art committee of the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art. The events celebrate creativity in areas beyond the traditional fine arts, such as gardening, cinema, scenic design and more. Each event will take place at a venue that corresponds with the highlighted craft.
The museum will continue to host its Family Days, films and workshops at participating Athens sites including the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the State Botanical Garden and the Lyndon House Arts Center.
In addition to in-state activities, GMOA on the Move includes ongoing traveling exhibitions around the U.S. The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection is currently on view at the Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, S.C., until March 22. It will relocate to the Columbus (Georgia) Museum this summer. Passport to Paris: 19th-Century French Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art will also be on display this summer at the Pensacola Museum of Art in Florida.
The completion of phase II of the art museum will bring a larger lobby, an outdoor sculpture garden, more storage space and new galleries. The museum is scheduled to reopen in early 2011.
