N.J. mulls plan to merge universities

New Jersey state legislators have appointed a committee to study whether to combine the University of Medicine and Dentistry with Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The thinking behind the committee’s creation is that merging the institutions could prod investments and be a boon to the state’s research and technology sectors. The idea was first studied in 2003, but was abandoned after cost concerns and opposition from the institution’s governing boards.
