The University of Minnesota’s board of regents recently voted 11-1 to build a new $249 million stadium for Gopher football, according to the Associated Press.
Under the plan, the university will cede 7,686 acres along the Vermillion River to the state in exchange for a $9.4 million annual payment to help finance the stadium.
Other stadium construction costs will fall upon the taxpayers, students, parking revenue and private donations. The university acquired the land from the federal government in 1947 and plans to make the property available for the public to use for hiking, cross-country skiing and wildlife viewing.
