Pregnancy, back pain, exercise study volunteers sought

The department of kinesiology is recruiting pregnant women to participate in a study.

Volunteers must have current back pain or a history of back pain, must be between the ages of 18 and 35, must be willing to be randomly assigned to one of three exercise programs, and must not be past the 21st week of pregnancy. Participating women must also be free of selected complications and must obtain approval from their pregnancy health-care providers.

Babysitting will be provided at the exercise and testing sessions. Volunteers will be paid $150 for participation and $60 for completing three one-hour testing sessions.

The 16-week moderate-intensity resistance exercise programs involve either exercise during pregnancy, exercise after pregnancy, or exercise after pregnancy with health education during pregnancy. The health education will involve pregnancy-related education classes to be held in the evening at Athens Regional Medical Center.
