#SB50 and UGA

While you’re enjoying Super Bowl 50 this Sunday, here are a few things to keep in mind as a Georgia Bulldog fan:

— Everyone loves the ads, right? Our Grady College of Journalism and Communication experts have a preview of what you can expect: celebrities and edgy content.

“I think one of the ads that is going to draw a lot of attention this year is one for Shock Top. It’s such a repartee between insults between these two that each one builds on one another and you just can’t help be drawn in by what each one says next.” — Tom Reichert, UGA Athletic Association Professor in Advertising Information.

— That’s UGA turf! This year’s Super Bowl 50 at Levi’s Stadium will be played on a field of Tifway 419, a turf developed by Glenn Burton, a historic scientist from the UGA Tifton Campus. This story from ESPN takes a look at the agricultural science behind creating a Super Bowl-worthy playing surface.

— Should we talk about the weather? Marshall Shepherd (below), a Georgia Athletic Association Professor and head of the UGA program in atmospheric sciences, has plenty to talk about, specifically Weather Facts Throughout Super Bowl History on Forbes.com.

— And, of course, we have a few former Bulldogs to root for:

Thomas Davis

* Thomas Davis (above), the outside linebacker for the Carolina Panthers, played for the Bulldogs from 2002-2004. He’s one of the most respected players in the NFL.

* Charles Johnson is a defensive end for the Panthers, drafted in 2007.

* Fernando Velasco is a center for the Panthers. He played for the Bulldogs from 2003 to 2006.

Enjoy the game, and feel free to shout out “Go Dawgs” whenever you want.
