Sunflower concert series returns June 24 to State Botanical Garden

The Sunflower Concert Series will return this year with three musical acts for outdoor concerts in the State Botanical Garden. This annual concert series, which benefits the garden’s Plant Conservation Program, allows attendees to experience the garden while enjoying live music on three Tuesday evenings this summer.

Tickets are $15, $10 for Friends of the Garden or $5 for children ages 6-12. Tickets include the price of admission, beverages and light snacks, and can be purchased at the garden’s gift shop, Schoolkids Records, AthensMusic.net or by calling (706) 542-1244.

The concerts will be held from 7-9 p.m. on the International Garden lawn. Chairs are not permitted as they damage the grass, but blankets are welcome. In the event of inclement weather or saturated ground conditions, the concerts will take place inside the garden’s Visitor Center and Conservatory.

On June 24, Scott Miller will play. The Wydells will open. Miller, a Sugar Hill Records recording artist, mixes folk music with rock music and has been featured on TV as the band leader for Jeff Foxworthy’s “Blue Collar TV.”

On July 29, Squat will perform. This jazz band is based out of Atlanta and Athens and performs mostly instrumental pieces infused with a blend of sounds ranging from Afro-Cuban to blues to hip-hop.

On Aug. 26, hope for agoldensummer will perform. Jean Spencer will open the show. Hope for agoldensummer creates an eclectic sound with the pairing of their harmonious voices with a variety of instruments, including anything from the ordinary (guitar and piano) to the unique (accordion, singing saw and old Coke bottles).

This concert series is presented by Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and sponsored by Athens Coca-Cola, Northeast Sales and Distributing, Musicians Warehouse, Flagpole Magazine, WUGA, AthensMusic.net, R.E.M. and Café Trumps at the Garden.
