UGA to remember 26 students, faculty, staff at memorial service April 27

Athens, Ga. – Twenty-six University of Georgia faculty, staff and students who died since last May will be remembered at the university’s annual candlelight memorial service April 27 at 7 p.m. on the steps of the Chapel.

UGA President Michael F. Adams will lead the service, called “Georgia Remembers . . . a Candlelight Memorial.” Names of each of the 14 students and 12 faculty and staff members will be read aloud, followed by a toll of the Chapel bell and the lighting of a candle.

Names will be read by Jeffrey Dorfman, a member of University Council; Stuart Ivy, president of the Staff Council; and Josh Delaney, president of the Student Government Association.

Members of the university’s Arch Society will light a candle as each name is read aloud. UGA’s Air Force ROTC honor guard will present the colors. Campus ministers will give the opening and closing prayers. And Southern Winds from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music will provide music for the event.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the flames from the Arch Society’s members’ lit candles will be passed into the crowd for attendees to light their own candles of remembrance.

Students whose names will be read are:

Alicia Anderson, a sophomore majoring in exercise and sport science from Savannah; John Bramlett, a junior majoring in recreation and leisure studies from Lawrenceville; Marc Taylor Gregg, a senior in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources from Athens; Emmanuel “Drew” Holland, a junior majoring in health promotion from Gainesville; Joshua Howle, a student in the College of Veterinary Medicine from Hartsville, S.C.; Samuel Morris Kennedy, a junior majoring in sports management from Peachtree City; Daniel Ronald Leuthner, a graduate student in science education from Nicholson; William Joseph McVay, a senior majoring in risk management and insurance from Midland; Thomas George Puthumana, a junior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology from Tucker; Steven “Art” Ryder, a senior pre-nursing student from Danielsville; Brittany Stadler, a junior majoring in political science from Marietta; Jhih-Chen Syu, a graduate student in crop and soil sciences from Taiwan; Michael Gene Warren, a senior majoring in religion from St. Simons; and Spencer Whitworth, a graduate student in accounting from Statham.

Faculty and staff, whose names will be read, are:

Efrat Atinsky, a postdoctoral research associate in plant pathology research; Clarence Clark, a building services worker in the Physical Plant; Kenneth Fischer, a professor in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music; Harold Gillispie, an office machine service technician in Central Office Supply; Ed Hoard, a clerk at the UGA Golf Course; Michael Kernis, a professor of psychology in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences; Daniel Patrick Mammola, an information technology professional in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music; Fred Mills, a professor in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music; Robert Rhoades, a research professor in anthropology; Sherry Schweder, a library associate in the UGA Libraries; John Shores, an editorial and production manager at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel; and Guanxiang Wang, a food services worker in food services.
