UGA Student Learning Center to open 24 hours on trial basis

Athens, GA. – The University of Georgia Student Learning Center will soon join Snelling Dining Commons in offering students 24-hour access. Beginning on Monday, Sept. 17, areas of the SLC will remain open from Sunday at 11 a.m. through Friday at 7 p.m. on a trial basis for the fall semester. The SLC will continue the regular schedule for Saturday.

“Students have expressed their desire to increase the Student Learning Center hours to provide unlimited access to this valuable campus resource. We believe this access is valuable to increase the academic goals and success of our students,” said Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

The second, third and fourth floors of the east wing (stadium side) of the SLC, which include individual and group study areas, computer workstations and vending facilities, will remain open during the extended hours. Entry and exit after 2 a.m. will be limited to the colonnade entrance on the east side of the second floor.

“The SLC was designed so that a portion could be open around-the-clock. I am glad we are able to respond to student demand and look forward to this trial period for the remainder of the semester,” said William Gray Potter, the university librarian and associate provost.

The SLC has operated on a 24-hour schedule during finals and the week prior for the last eight semesters, according to Florence King, director of the SLC. “Students definitely took advantage of the extended hours during finals and we believe word will travel fast and more and more students will take advantage of this convenience as the semester goes on.”

Building use, maintenance and costs associated with the extended schedule will be evaluated to determine the operating schedule for spring semester.

The SLC is a partnership of the University Libraries, the Center for Teaching and Learning and EITS. For more information on the SLC, see http://www.uga.edu/slc/. For questions about the new schedule, contact the building staff at learnctr@uga.edu or 706/542-7000.
