Media Advisory: UGA technician suffers animal bite

Athens, Ga. – A University of Georgia animal care technician working in the Davison Life Sciences Building suffered a severe bite to her thumb from a capuchin monkey during a routine cage cleaning procedure Wednesday morning just after 8 a.m. The worker was transported by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center and was transferred to a hand specialist in Atlanta for further treatment. The technician was fully enrolled in the occupational health and safety program for animal care workers, which ensures they are up to date with vaccines and are trained to work in animal care environments. The university’s Office of Animal Care and Use is investigating the incident.
