UGA Welcome Week features comedians, superheroes and more

Athens, Ga. – An outdoor showing of the 2011 hit film Thor, laughs from the Comedy Central network, nationally known magician Peter Boie and a Dawgs After Dark event with international flair will headline this year’s Big Dawg Welcome week for students at the University of Georgia. Big Dawg Welcome is sponsored by the University Union Student Programming Board.

Welcome Week 2011 kicks off on Aug. 14 with a special Freshman Welcome hosted by the UGA Alumni Association and Student Government Association. First-year students are invited to assemble at Sanford Stadium at 5:30 p.m. for a class of 2015 group photo and a message from UGA President Michael F. Adams. The event moves out to Reed Plaza afterward, where students will enjoy music, entertainment and the world’s largest dog bone cookie.

Admission to the Freshman Welcome is limited to first-year students.

Lights Out on Legion will feature a showing of Thor on Aug. 15 at 9 p.m. on Legion Field. Participants will view the film on a 32-foot screen while enjoying free popcorn, funnel cakes and cotton candy. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

The Comedy Central Campus Tour storms into the Tate Student Center Grand Hall on Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. Featured comedians include Nick Vatterott, Kumail Nanjiani and T.J. Miller.

Magician Peter Boie performs his unique show on Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Theater. Billed as “the magician for non-believers,” Boie challenges participants to stop trying to determine whether his magic is real and “just enjoy it.”

Welcome Week concludes with Dawgs After Dark: Bright Lights, Big City on Aug. 19 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Tate Student Center. Activities will be themed to the world’s great cities, including New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Hollywood. Free food will be served.

All Big Dawg Welcome events are free for students with valid UGACards who pay activity fees on the Athens campus. The Thor screening, comedy show and magic show are ticketed events. Students must present their valid UGACards to claim their free tickets at the Tate Cashier Window, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
