UGA will host NCAA golf championships

UGA will be the host site for two national golf championships.

The NCAA regional men’s golf championship will be played here in 2012. The 54-hole tournament is one of six regionals that will be held nationally. The top five teams from each regional will make up the 30-team field; about 15 teams will be invited to each regional.

The university also will host the 2013 NCAA women’s golf championship with the nation’s top golfers competing for both team and individual titles.

The UGA golf course is no stranger to post-season events. The women’s national championships were held in Athens in 1981, 1983 and 1993 as well the 2002 SECs and the 2008 NCAA East Regional for the women. The golf course also was the site of the men’s 1998 SEC championship, which UGA won. UGA also has hosted 38 editions of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the golf course, and this spring it was the site of the Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Athens Classic.
