Athens, Ga. – The George Foster Peabody Awards is seeking entries for the 73rd annual awards, which highlight excellence in electronic media.
Original broadcast, cablecast and webcast programs presented in the calendar year 2013 are eligible. The entry deadline is Wednesday, Jan.15. Entrants may apply online at www.peabodyawards.com.
Entries are being sought from worldwide media. “Call for Entries” alerts have been emailed around the globe, supplemented by advertising in a variety of media-industry publications.
The Peabody Awards, established in 1940 and administered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, are the oldest honor in television and radio. Today the Peabody recognizes distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by television and radio stations, networks, producing organizations, individuals and the Internet.
The 72nd annual Peabody Awards ceremony was emceed by Scott Pelley, anchor of “The CBS Evening News” and a multiple Peabody winner for his work on “60 Minutes,” at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in May. The 39 award recipients ranged from FX’s ground-breaking comedy “Louie” to SCOTUSblog, a website that monitors and illuminates the work of the U.S. Supreme Court. The diverse Peabody winners also included the TNT police drama “Southland,” Smithsonian Channel’s “MLK: The Assassination Tapes” and “Investigating the IRS,” an expose by station WTHR-TV in Indianapolis.
International winners included “Rapido Y Furioso” (Fast and Furious), Univision’s south of the border take on a bungled U.S. “gun walking” sting; “Salat” (Bone Dry), a look at hunger in the Philippines by the GMA Network; and the timeless British science-fiction adventure series “Doctor Who.”
The Peabody Award, considered the most selective and prestigious honor for electronic media programming, is unique in that there are no categories for entry or nominations. Entries are judged by a 16-member board that includes television critics, industry practitioners, scholars and experts in culture and fine arts.
