UGA Performing Arts Center and the Classic Center present Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel Five in

Athens, Ga.- America’s most famous trumpet player, Doc Severinsen, is coming to Athens for one night only on May 12 in Hodgson Concert Hall at the University of Georgia. Severinsen’s performance with the San Miguel Five is part of the Celebrity Evenings series, a collaboration between the UGA Performing Arts Center and the Classic Center.

Severinsen is known and loved by millions for his thirty years as the band leader on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Severinsen has made more than 30 albums, ranging from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. His recordings include Unforgettably Doc with the Cincinnati Pops and the Grammy-nominated Once More With Feeling. He received a Grammy Award for Best Jazz instrumental Performance Big Band for his recording of Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band-Volume I.

After moving to Mexico in 2006, Severinsen continued to maintain a busy performance schedule, and he made new discoveries in very talented Mexican musicians.One such musician was renowned classical guitarist Gil Gutierrez. Together with Gutierrez, Severinsen has crafted an innovative and exciting new project dubbed the San Miguel Five.The band showcases classical Spanish music with a jazz flair, along with Latino and American ballads, plus some popular movie music.

In addition to Gutierrez, the San Miguel Five features violinist Charlie Bisharat, a Grammy Award-winning musician whose artistry has graced the albums of Alanis Morissette, The Rolling Stones, Jane’s Addiction, and Aerosmith. The ensemble also includes percussionist Jimmy Branly and bass player Kevin Thomas.
